What are the impacts to victims?
Trafficking victims are often trapped and bounded by their traffickers. It also makes them vulnerable to risky behaviours. Even if they are lucky enough to escape or being let go off, their experience haunts them for a lifetime. It affects not only their human rights but also their health such as:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety/ Depression
- Continue in line of prostitution
- Recreational drug dealers/abuser
- Alcohol addiction
- Infected by sexual transmitted infections (Syphilis, HIV, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia)
- Teenage pregnancy/abortion
- A victim of social stigma
- Malnourishment
- Physical disabilities
Is there a way to identify youths who are possible trafficking victims?
Yes, there are! Before teaching the youths on how to identify, parents and caretakers must know the signs!
- Being a runaway
- Unexplained physical injuries (broken bones, bruises)
- Lying about age/ Fake ID’s
- Multiple pregnancies
- Living with employer
- Employer is holding identity documents
- Submissive or fearful
- Sexual transmitted infections
- Under 18 and in prostitution
What should we do if we suspect or know someone is being trafficked?
Before taking any actions, make sure you have proof of trafficking on the person suspected to be a victim or a trafficker. Never take actions into your own hands as it might endanger you and the people around you. Call “999” to make a report.

How do we prevent human trafficking?
Some possible prevention strategies are:
- Reducing the vulnerability of potential victims through improvement in social and economic developments
- Discouraging and reducing the demands for the services of trafficked persons by law empowerment
- Public education on human trafficking to create awareness
- Tighter country border control
- Prevent corruptions among public officials
