When the sperm meets the egg.
When a girl reaches puberty, she is fertile and can become pregnant. About once a month, one ovary will release an egg, this phase is called ovulation. Ovulation occurs during the 14th day of the 28 day of the menstrual cycle. The egg will pass through the fallopian tube and make its way to the uterus.
When a man and woman have sexual intercourse, the man will insert his penis to the woman’s vagina. During sexual intercourse, a man may ejaculate semen which carries millions of sperms. The sperm will stay in the vagina, millions of sperm dies but only a few will make its way through the fallopian tube. If a female egg is in the fallopian tube, the sperm joins the egg and fertilization occurs. The fertilized eggs (or embryo) will implant on the uterus. The embryo will grow into a fetus (baby). It takes about 9 months for a baby to grow inside the uterus. After 9 months, the baby will be delivered via vagina (meaning natural birth) or other delivery methods such as caesarean section, vacuum extraction or forceps. If fertilization does not happen, menstruation occurs.
Pregnancy can be avoided by not having sex. A women is most likely to become pregnant just after the time of ovulation- when the egg is released from the ovary.
