The World Health Organization (1993) defined life skills as “the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviours, that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life” (p.1). Life skills include attitudes and abilities relating to living with ourselves, with other people and the environment around us.
Life skills has an important role to play in promoting sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of young people. In fact, SRH of young people is largely associated with their sexual behaviours and practices, and thus imparting and enhancing the development of basic life skills is crucial.
Decisions about our sexuality are very personal, and may be influenced by one’s own values, peer pressure, cultural beliefs, self-esteem and knowledge on sexuality education.
